Month August 8, 2008 Darla is a Board Certified Ocularist, one of less than 200 individuals worldwide to have earned this certification. An Ocularist is someone who makes and fits artificial eyes. She maintained a private practice in Pennsylvania and Ohio for 25 years before retiring to Florida. Darla has had several articles published in the Journal of the American Society of Ocularists. She has presented courses for many organizations including the American Academy of Opthalmology and various other medical and private groups. Darla's two interests from childhood were art and science. These two were ultimately combined in her career choice. Making artificial eyes requires attention to detail. Each prosthesis is individually hand made then cast in a mold. The plastic eye is then hand painted to match the patients' living eye.
